Entering into the holiday season, it's a wonderful time full of candy canes and presents. But what makes the holiday season for every boy and girl? It's the songs and movies that emulate the season. However, we've moved past Rudolf the Red-Nosed Reindeer and replaced it with Lady Gaga's "Christmas Tree." They're taking the joy of christmas and turning it into sex...yay our generation!
If you haven't heard Lady Gaga's Christmas Tree, you can find the lyrics here:

And as far has Christmas films go, they aren't even Christmas films anymore! They're all about romance. If you search "Modern Christmas Films" on Google the first link that comes up is "Top 5 Christmas Romances." http://hubpages.com/hub/Top-5-Modern-Christmas-Romance-Movies. This seems absurd. Has Christmas become just romance and sex? (I don't think so) But it seems as though culture is destroying it...
So I ask you, how do you feel about this?
Listen to Ella Fitzgerald's Christmas album, "Ella Wishes You A Swinging Christmas" That's a good one. Louis Armstrong has some Christmas music too which is okay.
ReplyDeleteI don't really even like Lady Gaga in general. I'm sick of having people tell me that she's a "classically trained, musically intelligent" artist. If she was intelligent, she would use some thoughtful lyrics. She's also a crappy piano player. It doesn't make her "musically intelligent" by taking piano lessons when was growing up.
I like "A Christmas Story," It's a Wonderful Life," and "Die Hard!" I think the last movie about Christmas that I enjoyed was " the Polar Express." I also like "Elf."
I think it's just safe to say that our generation sucks. There is no inspiration in today's pop culture. I think part of it is that our generation doesn't like to think. I don't even know. People seem to love the music and movies being made today. Maybe these are new classics. I just feel like people are missing out though.
I agree that the new Christmas movies and songs that are coming out now are not the same as they used to be. The classics are still there, replayed on the radio and on tv every year. So, we still get exposed to them, even in these modern times. There have been a few gems in recent years, so all is not lost. But I agree that things have changed. No Christmas movie that has come out recently has topped "A Christmas Story." :)
ReplyDeleteI agree with sarah about the movies and songs, it's so funny to listen to 94.9 during the holidays because all the music that’s being played is from a long time ago. I might be along here but I like listening to those songs, only during the holidays, but as it’s been said they weren’t anything that’s been released recently. It’s sad to see what’s happening with music and movies in our generation and I’m not a fan but I think what’s hard for music and movie produces to do is release something that’s “old-fashion” because there are so many lady gaga fans out there that it just wouldn’t get as much money as songs like hers get. I don’t like this but I think that’s what’s happening, and like leif said, it’s just sad.
ReplyDeleteI love 94.9. It's such a treat to be able to listen to christmas music. It adds to that christmas spirit. It's the classics that I truly enjoy. But I completely agree with you on the movie aspect. It is all about love...ok that's great, but Christmas has a deeper meaning.
ReplyDeleteThat's because we as consumers buy that crap. Everything is a market opportunity these days. If the demand was for movies and music that truly define Christmas, they would be made. But since our generation is only interested in sex and money, all of pop culture revolves around those themes--and now even Christmas is included.
